The V-FLY Series A shimmering baitfish Here is our version of the V-FLY Russian Black/Holo Gold # 4 – A slightly bigger Riffling Hitch fly (equivalent to a # 4 regular fly) made in line with our see-through theories on surface salmon flies See-through ideas and practice with the bigger V-FLY If you have followed the work we do here on Fishmadman you might have read about the qualities of see-through tubing and how we incorporate these elements into many of our flies that we and other anglers over the years have had success with. In 2018, I began experimenting with hitch flies that featured minimal shimmering body material, deviating from the traditional approach of using fully covered shimmering body material. This involved attaching strips of shimmering material to the tubing using glue, a technique we continue to refine here at Fishmadman. The bodies of our two larger V-FLYs are crafted using this method, and I’ve extensively tested them over the past two seasons with excellent results. While I primarily fish them as sub-surface flies positioned close to the surface, they also perform admirably when used as hitch flies. A great August fly Here an August salmon caught on the V-FLY Silver tippet/Holo Gold See-through tubing Capturing the essence of small baitfish Medium/big Slightly bigger than the V-FLY group at 29 mm (1.14 inch) body- equivalent in length to a #4 hook… But it is a problematic fly to compare to a fly tied on a hook Hook Not Included Just a quick note! While we display our tube flies with hooks to showcase their style and appearance, please be aware that the fly is sold without the hook. You can find detailed information about suitable hooks for each fly on the respective product page. We offer options such as barbless hooks, double hooks, and treble hooks, allowing you to choose the best fit for your preferences or the regulations of the river you’re fishing in. Subsurface Fly or Hitch Fly Similar to many of our hitch flies, the V-FLY Silver Tippet/Holo Gold fly offers versatility. You can utilize it as a subsurface fly by threading the tippet through the front of the tubing, as you would with most tube flies. Alternatively, you can employ it as a hitch fly by inserting the leader through the hole located at the front end (throat) of the fly, allowing it to skate on the water’s surface. The riffling hitch tube fly system – In detail Delicate micro flies perfected to trail on the surface All Fishmadman hitch tube flies are based on the same clever system that will enable you to fish with different hooks. The line is entered through a hole in the belly or side of the fly. This will make the fly pull to the surface and wake. Due to the design of the tube system, the fly will hitch with ease even in slack water. We use fine hair from small squirrels, which has proven to be an unrivalled material for these subtle micro wake flies. All other tubing found in fly tying shops could not live up to our expectations. Together with a chemical engineer, we developed a new PVC-free plastic formula for the solemn purpose of producing a tube for riffling hitch. It will withstand a lot of mechanical wear. Deficient memory – This will ensure that the tube falls back into place after use (hook removed) It will work in various temperatures, including frost and cold days. This is the same tube we use for our wake flies and other bigger tube flies. . The right kind of hair Squirrel tail in the right size We use hair from very small or juvenile squirrels. This type of fine hair is not too stiff or too fine…but it is just perfect for these subtle surface flies. Learn more about squirrel tails for fly-tying More on the subject riffling hitch...
